Here the objective is to understand the lay of the land, the questions that need to be answered, and the issues surrounding them.
We talk to all key stakeholders. And then talk to anyone else we believe didn’t make the list, but should have.
We develop a discussion guide and then conduct a two-day workshop. It’s intense and intellectually challenging. Everyone participates. There is no place to hide. It is always very very revealing. Both about the stated scope, and what else bubbles up from discussion.
From this, we have a baseline. We know where everyone stands. What they believe. What there is agreement on. Where there are differences. And what additional work we need to do.
Using what we’ve learned, we prepare our findings, thoughts, and recommendations.
The group then comes together again for a half-day session where our findings (truths) are shared and discussed. This is always a fun session that aligns everyone (and often highlights that some have serious soul searching to do…which is a good thing).
Once everyone is on the same page, assignments are given to the group, and plans developed. We work with each party at their request.
These plans are then assembled into a master document.
Here plans turn into actions. Sometimes we participate in that process directly, or help vet resources.
Most often, we become ongoing advisors, providing counsel and serving as the eyes and ears to the Board, or C-suite.
